Since 2018, HMDC has utilized the Biodiversity Impact Reporting System (BIRS) tool to assess biodiversity across its tenement areas. The company is dedicated to restoring affected land to a state capable of supporting natural regeneration or resembling its condition prior to quarrying. Evaluating the presence of terrestrial flora and fauna in rehabilitated sites helps HMDC gauge the effectiveness of its rehabilitation efforts.

BIRS enables stakeholders to understand site- specific challenges and opportunities, crucial for enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem quality. HMDC has established a baseline biodiversity index and tracks biodiversity improvement over time. HMDC promptly addresses threats identified during assessments, aiming to maintain or increase site biodiversity indices. BIRS guides efforts to recreate habitats that are rare, uncommon, or of high ecological importance, allowing the company to prioritize areas with significant biodiversity value.

HMDC recently engaged secondary students in BIRS assessments, aiming to involve and educate the younger generation. This initiative not only provides students with hands-on experience but also fosters a connection with nature. While the activity lasted only two days, HMDC plans to collaborate with students annually to sustain knowledge continuity and enhance their BIRS assessment skills. Empowering the younger generation to protect the environment reflects HMDC's commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
